Background of the study
Nigerian languages exhibit a rich diversity of phonological features that contribute to their distinct identities. Among these, Yoruba and Hausa are two major languages with contrasting consonant inventories that serve as critical markers of meaning. In Yoruba, consonantal contrasts are often influenced by tonal and rhythmic patterns, while Hausa, belonging to the Chadic branch, presents unique articulatory properties such as emphasis on ejectives and glottal stops. This study investigates the phonemic contrasts between these languages by examining their consonant inventories and identifying subtle differences in articulation and acoustic realization. Detailed phonetic analyses of recorded speech samples from native speakers will be conducted to measure formant frequencies, voice onset times, and spectral properties. Such an examination is expected to reveal how distinct phonemic features contribute to meaning differentiation and linguistic identity. Furthermore, the study will consider sociolinguistic factors such as dialectal variation and language contact, which may affect consonant production in urban and rural settings. By integrating acoustic phonetic analysis with sociolinguistic surveys, the research aims to establish a comprehensive profile of phonemic contrasts that can inform language teaching, speech recognition technology, and language policy in Nigeria (Olayinka, 2023; Adeyemi, 2024). This inquiry not only enriches our understanding of phonological systems in Nigerian languages but also highlights the importance of preserving linguistic diversity amid rapid cultural change.
Statement of the problem
Despite the critical role of consonantal contrasts in distinguishing meaning, there is limited systematic research comparing the consonant inventories of Yoruba and Hausa. Variability in phonemic realization—stemming from dialectal and socio-cultural influences—remains underdocumented, impeding the development of accurate linguistic models and technology applications. This lack of data hinders efforts to standardize pronunciation for educational and speech recognition purposes, thus affecting language preservation and communication effectiveness (Olayinka, 2023).
Objectives of the study:
1. To document and compare the consonant inventories of Yoruba and Hausa.
2. To analyze acoustic features that differentiate phonemic contrasts.
3. To provide recommendations for language teaching and technology integration.
Research questions:
1. What are the key consonantal differences between Yoruba and Hausa?
2. How do acoustic properties vary across these languages?
3. What implications do these differences have for linguistic applications?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a detailed comparison of Yoruba and Hausa consonant inventories, offering valuable insights for linguists, educators, and developers of speech technology. The findings will enhance phonetic models and support language preservation efforts, ultimately contributing to more effective language teaching and communication strategies (Adeyemi, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to phonemic contrasts in Yoruba and Hausa consonant inventories and does not include other phonetic features or languages.
Definitions of terms:
1. Phonemic Contrast: Differences in sound that distinguish meaning in language.
2. Consonant Inventory: The set of consonant sounds used in a language.
3. Acoustic Analysis: The study of the physical properties of speech sounds.
